Emory vs Rice for social sciences

Let’s get back to the OPs question…Rice v Emory.

Best to visit both campuses, and stay for a few days and attend classes/etc with a current student…

@twoinanddone – great suggestion on the coin flip! I’ve heard that in other contexts before.

I think it’s telling that the kid could have easily attended admitted students events at Emory on Thurs (it was senior skip day, lol), yesterday, today, Monday…and she really didn’t want to go, because she’s all but decided on Rice.

She’s just trying to come to terms with a) the linguistics/psych dual major at Emory looks a bit more robust than what’s offered at Rice, on paper anyway, and b) Rice is further away than she’d hoped to be.

Otherwise, she thinks Rice is a better fit in terms of size, vibe, social structure, most things.

She reached out to a couple linguistics professors at Rice, asking for more info about the program. And she reached out to the choir director, asking about the likelihood of getting a spot in the chorale as a non-music major.

It’s a holiday weekend, so she may not hear from them very soon – but crossing my fingers they respond with something she wants to hear, as I think it’s all but a done deal.

Thank you all for your help!

Did you make it to Owl Days at Rice? There was a specific tour for the Humanities department. (We are from Atlanta and my daughter is thinking of majoring in Philosophy/Visual Art.) We were super impressed. Faculty is top notch, and you’re engaging with full time faculty for the most part – not TAs. We fell in love with the campus and Rice Village and she committed to Rice that day.

No, unfortunately – I have a theater kid, and the Owl Days fell during her last show week. But we did an official tour last summer, and same – she fell in love with the campus.

If mine commits for sure, maybe we could try to put our kids in touch? And I would love to msg you about logistics of hauling dorm stuff via drive/flight.

Absolutely!

Fwiw, at Owl Days my daughter and I talked to a student double majoring in Ling and Comp Sci - she hopes to work on improving AI natural language capabilities. My kid isn’t necessarily going to major in Ling, but it sounds like there are some pretty amazing opportunities there.

Thank you for this! I would love it if my kid became interested in computational linguistics and the more techy side, because it sure would be nice to find a job that pays the bills, lol!

My wife went to Rice undergrad and then went to a second tier law school (due to a lower LSAT score). When she applied for an in-house counsel job in New England, the recruiter convinced the general counsel to interview her because of Rice undergrad degree.

Rice University is a great school and does carry a lot of weight in the job market even outside of Texas. I would not classify Rice as a “regional university”.

Congratulations! Your owl will soar at Rice. The Rice Parent to Parent Facebook group is a great resource for incoming (and veteran) parents. It is a closed group. If your child is enrolled at Rice they will admit you if you send them a request.
