This week I was able to tour Wash U, Rice and Emory. I really liked Wash U but the cost there is significantly more than the other two. I am from Atlanta and always wanted to leave Georgia for school. However, I liked Emory. Since applying I have narrowed down my major and want to major in the business school with a plan to do DEI consulting. Rice is a great school. Their undergrad business is very very new though and they have two concentrations- management and finance. Emory actually has a consulting major in the business school. Overall of course, Rice is better ranked. Looking for feedback on choosing between the two. Thank you!
2 great schools. Probably a similar student body but I think Emory will have a larger number of humanities and arts types than Rice. Rice has D1 sports and Emory doesn’t, it I doubt sports are a big deal at Rice.
I would say Rice is overall on a slightly higher academic and prestige tier but not enough to make or break a decision.
Emory, I think, handles business school the right way in that you can come to Emory 1st and then decide after a year or more what it is you want to study. Rice might be doing that the same way, but like you said, Emory’s program is more well established. Based on that, if your plan is a business major, I’d probably go with Emory.
You can go to consulting from myriad majors - including social sciences and humanities. . Do you want to major in business or something more theory based like Econ ? Rice has long had an MBA so I’m sure it’s B major will be fine.
Rice has the residential college system. Both are ‘elite’…Rice historically more so but both are fine names and I would pick the more appealing to you one.
I plan to double major wherever I go but definitely intend for one of those to be business.
For business Emory established and at the graduate level is a top 10-15 feeder into elite management consulting. The business program is very well renowned and is more established than Rice. Emory I believe places more into New York and has a stronghold over the southeast. Rice does very well in Texas. However more New York firms come to Emory. Atlanta is a major city for consulting and that is definitely a plus. Overall both are great schools but Emory definitely has the edge for business. Don’t worry about the overall rank when both are fairly similar. Rice is like 17 and Emory is 21. Chose the better program and see where you fit better and where you’ll be happy. Rice’s residential college system is definitely a plus and Texas is a booming place not to mention that Rice is a very prestigious school. See where you’ll be happy. Just from a tunnel vision business/consulting point of view Emory is somewhat better
Then as long as the school offers that ability I think you are fine. Emory the bigger b school name but that’s not the reason to choose it. Rice the better overall name…also not the reason to choose it. Which do you connect best with ? Price being equal that’s where you go.
Rice is slightly higher ranked but not any different from Emory. These schools are the same tier. They’re ranked similarly on many rankings. However with that said for business your best options are Emory and WashU. They’re the only ones with established business schools and pipelines to investment banking and management consulting. Rice will not get you there. I would ask WashU for more money and see what they say otherwise go with Emory.
Rice and Emory are both great schools located in large urban areas. Both have beautiful campuses. Don’t let the fact that Emory is in your hometown be the main reason you decide against it. Emory is a self contained campus where you will be in your own college world. You will be having new experiences and meeting new people from all over the country and international students. You can treat the experience as if you are away at college. You and your parents can set boundaries so you don’t go home much or see them often. I am obviously a fan of Rice as my daughter went there, but the business major is new this year. There may be some kinks to be worked out during the roll out. The business major to consulting path seems to be well established at Emory. The rankings are not that different. Go with the place you think is the best fit for you.
My daughter’s choices came down to Rice and Emory. She felt that Rice was the best fit, but her one hesitation about Rice was that it was in her hometown. However, that ended up not being an issue. Once school started, we respected her boundaries, she was in her own world, and we hardly saw her until Thanksgiving break.
