A 67 y/o former UD Professor with dementia has been missing (I don’t know from where)since last Thursday and a search is on for him. He has a history of visiting the shops/eateries on Main Street so the student body is being asked to be on the lookout for him. He may be wearing a fishing vest (he apparently was an ardent fisherman in the past). Hopefully he will be found safe.

oh, I hope that former teacher is found. I was down there yesterday, took my Dad down to have lunch and see his sister that lives in New Castle, (he has not seen her in 20 years… yes, we only live 2 hours away… that’s another story!) Picked up D at her dorm, I can she’s settled in! Calc is an issue but at least from you folks I know she’s not alone. She’s working hard and getting extra help so that’s all I can ask for from her.

We went over by the mall had a nice lunch and toured around campus a bit so my Dad could see the campus. It was a beautiful day at U Del!

D was walking around campus talking about her clubs she’s in and what “we” do with the clubs. I warned her heavy rain was coming today and she said… “oh good! I love when it rains, I get to wear my leopard rain boots!” What??? um you have to walk a mile to classes! lol! if she can be happy when it rains, then it’s official, she’s a happy blue hen! :)

Yes when your child calls and asks to send “rain boots” and is willing to wear them, they are happy.

If any parents are ever concerned about the “types” of crime, you can look it up on Delaware website, the month and day of the week can be seen.

You can see the majority of “crimes” are underage drinking infractions, gives the time and names the dorms the incidents happened. Why the kids “think” they will get away with it is beyond me, but…

My S is a freshman, living in Russell-A. He’s in a triple which struck me as incredibly cramped - think life on a submarine. But, maybe by luck or some careful analysis on the part of Residence Life and those student questionnaires, he’s doing fine. Roomies are laid back and all seem to get along. I’ve heard no complaints. In fact, I’ve heard no complaints about anything at UDEL. He is extremely happy with his college choice and everything is going well, so far. He’s in the Marching Band and that takes a lot of time - practices and football games and what not. That and classes keep him away from the dorm a lot. Maybe that’s why he’s OK with the triple arrangement. Been down to two football game so far and the Marching Band is incredible. Oh, and the games are a great experience too. Wouldn’t hurt if we had a little better protection for the quarterback though - seems he’s hit a lot after he throws.

Haven’t seen any postings in a while but wanted to see what’s happening with calculus 221. I know elj and Lefty both have kids in that class. My D is really finding it tough – and that’s after a solid year of pre-calc/calc (yes,I know this is UD, not high school). She went to a “group” review and walked out along with half the kids as the guy wasn’t sure what to do. She also went to math lab for first time yesterday. Told her get a private tutor but she’s reluctant and cost isn’t the reason. Curious as to how the rest are faring. Elj, I think your son also has “Tim”. DD said very nice but hard to follow and not thorough in explanations. Told her it’s her job to make him thorough and if that means during office hours, then that’s what it means.

Many students are very self-conscious about having to avail themselves of a private tutor (the concept is alien to them because they have never found they needed it in HS and people who use them are often perceived as being “lacking”). The usefulness of group reviews/tutoring is somewhat limited because they usually cannot focus on particular problem areas each student is having. My D finally gave in and got some individual tutoring in her first semester, found it extremely useful, and subsequently admitted she should have sought it out sooner. She also found that going to see her professors during their office hours was helpful, but still felt the indivdual tutoring was most useful (and its not that expensive if you go thru UD). Your D might want to reconsider this-the earlier the better.

My D also took Calc 221 (but had taken Pre-Calc at UD first) and did find it tough as well. Her exam scores were not what she was used to but she still felt she would probably get a B in the course (it didn’t really matter that much as she took the course as a free elective on pass/fail basis). She was surprised to find out that she got an A- in it (she then kicked herself for taking it pass/fail). She found out later that a number of math courses at UD determine final grades on a curve basis, so you might want to keep this in mind, but I can’t provide a guarantee that this is still the case.

Thanks very much for the reply. She is going to see the TA Monday (quiz earlier today) and I will encourage tutor. She just thinks that for her, they don’t work but that’s because she never did what tutor’s said to do or really cared. Prof. said no curve but given what I am told about grades my D and her friends are receiving in this class (they know the range), I would think that’s going to happen. Frankly, if I were the professor I would also begin the year with a statement that I don’t curve and I’m glad the kids believe there won’t be one.

Hi Bill,
I was away last week so I haven’t spoken too much to D about classes but last I heard all was going well. she got an 83 on her last exam and has been getting high B’s on her quizzes. she did some group help and also has been getting some help from the boys in her dorm that are engineering students so it’s been a help to her. Her teacher records and posts lecutures online so she often watches the class again. So far so good, I think… lol! I will be checking in with her about grades this week and let you know if there are any changes. The tutor option is a great one if she needs the help. Mine was all for it but it seems there is help in her dorm so for now she’s not using the tutors. good luck to your D! :)

Thanks, Lefty. That is terrific. I guess she is not in the same class/discussion as my D or she is and she is one of the lucky few doing well. I am told that most of my D’s class failed the most recent quiz and that professor said TA made quiz too long and difficult and prof was adding points to all scores. Not good. Only saving grace is that she is at the higher end of the class.

The freshman mid-term marking period ended on Friday. Your D should be getting her midterm grade report soon so she will see how she stands in the Calculus class and all her other classes.

Are the mid-term grades posted anywhere? We looked at student website and have not found anything. Thanks.

The grades will be on UDSIS when they are available. If you click on the academic drop down box there is a spot for grades and that is where they are always posted. Only freshmen get midterm grades, and not all professors actually give them although they are supposed to.

Thanks, Zoosermom. I looked there, saw the space for grades, and the only posted grades are for classes she took in high school. I guess that means they didn’t post, which is fine. Boy it is really going fast.

Bill, did you click on the mid-term grades tab? That’s where I found the grades for my son. Only 4 of the 5 have put grades in.

I went to “My Academics”, then “Course History” and then I see the classes with the “Grade” box but no tab for mid-term grades. Can you be more specific? Thanks.

Under Academics, there is the other academic with a drop down menu, and arrow. Click on grades, brings you to class grades, fall semester. Click on the mid term grades tab. Hope that works for you.

Thanks, jbsmom. Found it. Yikes! She better get a move on it or I will be posting on another board next year. She said this is what she expected but knows what she has to do, has time, and will do it. I hope so…

I can not figure it out. I go to my academics, course schedule and then see nothing like you describe. I think I must be stupid. I can’t figure it out…

Go into Student Center. Look to the left under “Academics” and that short list and you will see a box with an arrow. In the box is the word “other academics”. Clidk on the down arrow int that box and you will see “grades”. Click on “grades” and within that is mid-term grades.

Thanks Bill,
Figured it out. She is doing as expected. All good…
