The first final exams for freshman can be very stressful. How are everyone's kids doing? These times can also be very stressful for parents as well. How is everyone handling it? Any suggestions for others?

My daughter doesn’t seem to be too stressed out. The semester has gone well so far and she’s pretty confident that the final exams won’t hurt her grades. Done on Thursday at 12:30 and home on Friday!

Best of luck to all of the students this week. One down, seven to go!

My son was more stressed out about a final paper for honors colloquium, a final group project and presentation for bus admin, and then an individual project, all due in the last week. He’s not really worried about the 3 exams left, at least they’re on separate days starting Wednesday.

His last exam is Friday 7-10 PM, so we’ll come pack him up before dinner and then probably just hang in Barnes and Noble until he’s done. I just wish his exams were earlier in the schedule and not the last time slot!

The semester started off slow, but I can’t believe it’s almost over. Good luck to your students on their exams, and happy holidays.

So much for confidence… My daughter called this morning to say that the consensus on the MATH 241 final was that it was a tough one.

Onto CHEM 103 tomorrow evening.

Well, my DD has been preparing me for failing Calculus. Took it yesterday. Midterm grade was F. Told her to go find a tutor and she said she went but couldn’t get a private one so she did the group sessions. Any suggestions on what to do in terms of retaking? If she really worked hard – she says she did-- what do you do? They don’t get smarter overnight. When do they post grades? Prof said she will have exam graded by today as it is multiple choice.
Told DD not to dwell on it as she really needs the other classes to make up for calc if it turns out as she expects. For acctg major doesn’t need min grade in calc but it is troubling nonetheless.

Bill124:

So sorry to hear about your D’s Calculus difficulties. The exam grade may be posted today but I suspect the final course grade may not be posted until the end of this week or even the beginning of next week. The only ray of hope I can give you is my D’s experience with Calculus at UD. She told me that student grades on Calculus quizzes and exams are notoriously low at UD. Based on her grades in these things she thought she would be lucky to eke out a B or even B- in the course but received a final grade of A-. She found out afterwards that Calculus final grades tend to be curved once all the grades on the quizzes, term exams, and final exam are completed. Obviously I can’t guarantee this and this was 4 years ago.

I think your advice to your D to put the Calculus exam behind her and focus on her other exams was excellent. Hopefully she will perceive herself doing better on the other exams which should make her feel at least a little bit better. You probably can’t really make any definitive plans right now about Calculus until she receives her final course grade. I wish her the best of luck.

My D is in the pulling-her-hair out and raving-at-everyone phase of preparation for the organic chemistry final tomorrow.

Zoos–my DS is taking organic chem this semester, so I can relate to the symptoms. Good luck to you DD!

D is done. Flying home today. Had an amazing first semester. Can’t imagine what she will do home for 7+ weeks.

Congrats socaldad!! Enjoy her company, but beware that this break becomes very old, particularly when the friends leave before your D does.

Yes Zoosermom, we are concerned with what she will do. Finding a temp job is not that easy. perhaps babysitting or a last minute internship will help…

Hi all! My DD was done last Thursday-she’s an English major and spent a lot of time over the last two weeks stressed out over papers and presentations. I picked her up on Friday and we spent the weekend in Boston with family for Hanukkah. So happy she was able to do this!

This week she started an internship in NYC. Working full time until it’s time to go back. It’s unpaid but a great experience. I know that the long break is appealing to kids but you really need a plan. Otherwise it is brutal for all. (Last January, DD studied abroad.)

Enjoy your kids!
