How's engineering at Vanderbilt? And how does it compare to engineering programs at other schools? What makes Vanderbilt's engineering program worth coming to?

Aren’t all engineering programs pretty much the same? I would think one would attend Vanderbilt Engineering for non-engineering-related-reasons such as good location, excellent financial aid, smaller classes, responsive administration, smart students, etc.

@SoCalDad2 Yes, but you could get that at any university of Vanderbilt’s caliber (for the most part). What sets Vandy apart, is what I meant.

I’ve said this about a number of degrees at Vanderbilt-- What’s special about Vanderbilt is its focus on undergraduates and the amazing quality of life it can provide. There is nothing out-of-this-world about Vandy’s engineering school. It’s just a solid engineering school at a fantastic university.

In other words, Vanderbilt’s pitch isn’t “Be an engineering student here because we have n unusually strong/cool engineering program” as you might see at some of the top ranked engineering schools. Vanderbilt pitch is “Be an engineering student here because it’s just really great to be a Commodore.”

I think it is a pretty small group of schools, especially if you eliminate those not in urban areas.

If you want a highly academic, mid-size school in an urban environement that plays sports in a power conference, with a stong engineering program, the list gets very short. There are few universities of Vanderbilt’s caliber that meet this criteria. If you figure out what is important to you, then you’ll be able to develop a list of schools that are right for you.

The criteria listed above was my son’s. He’s happily attending VU.

I would like chime in: my Son has been accepted by Vandy in doing 3+2 (Physics at Tulane Univ and Mechanical Eng. at Vandy). He will get his second degree in two years at this school. He has specifically chosen it because the school has great Research. My son is deep into research and he apparently likes both the Aeronautical and Robotics stuff. He will choose one of them by Dec 2014 to pursue it into advance studies (Phd). Since Vandy like Tulane is member of AAU therefore the research is very cool and intense. If anyone out there wants to study engineering, y’all have to go any schools that has research as this separates between boys and men.
