Engineering College Undergraduate from another country, looking to study in the US ( US Citizen)

I am new here in this forum, and don’t really know the process for college in the US.

I am the mother of an 18 year old who is coming back to the US in 2 weeks, because he has finally decided to continue his studies here. All his schooling was in another country ( The Philippines) , but he has been going back and forth.

I came to the USA with a degree, which was accepted by US standards, so all these college stuff with my son is all new to me. My country of origin is way too different.

I just joined CC, and is trying to navigate the forums. I started with the Abbreviation thread.

To all you nice people, please enlighten me on how to help my son with the process. We have requested for his transcripts to be sent to an accredited institution for equivalency in the US. That is what we have done so far.

Thanks in advance.

This forum is for transfer students, which means students who have started college in one university and then transfer to another. Your son is not a transfer student but an entering Freshman so you are better off finding a thread that deals with college selection and admissions.

You can start with the [College Admissions](Applying to College - College Confidential Forums) forum and then read all you can about the process of application. Since your son is a U.S. Citizen, he will be a domestic applicant even though his secondary education is in another country. Make sure that the high school transcripts ad translated and that he lines up teachers and counselors who can provide recommendation letters or evaluations. He needs to take either the ACT or the SAT tests and then start looking at how to fill out the Common Application. You need to start now because it will take sometime to do all this and most applications are due between December 1 and March 1 of next year.

Thank you for your reply, xraymancs!
