Engineering HS Courses

Hi. I am interested in study engineering in college. Currently, I am enrolled in AP Calc BC, AP Physics 2, and AP Computer Science A for my STEM courses. I feel like these classes will prepare me well (as much as a high school course is capable of) for this particular major. However, my school started a new Engineering Honors course this year. Many of my friends who are interested in the same major are taking that course instead. Basically, I’m just wondering if anyone thinks it is worth the switch. Since AP CompSci is definitely more rigorous, I feel as though colleges will take that into consideration. I just don’t want the fact that I am not taking Engineering Honors to hurt my chances getting admitted into programs against my peers. In your opinion, which course would appear more competitive for engineering? Thanks!!

It won’t hurt you…Calc, Physics and Comp Sci all prepare you for the foundation courses needed for engineering.
I would only take engineering as an elective, not to replace any of those.

Totally agree with the above. If you have room to take engineering IN ADDITION to the other classes, take it. If not, those AP courses should be your priority…

Take all the AP courses you can. Score 4 or 5 on all of them. This is the best prep IMHO. My son wanted to take the new Engineering classes his HS offered, but they wouldn’t let him start as a freshman. So he took as many APs as he could, scored 5’s, and got into Northwestern Engineering. He started as a “freshman with sophomore standing” and graduated with a BS & MS in 4 years thanks to the AP classes. Guess you don’t really need the HS Engineering classes after all!

High school engineering courses will typically not give you advanced placement in college, but may allow you to determine whether you will be interested in engineering before applying to college (many colleges do require you to apply to engineering majors or the engineering division, which may be more selective due to heavier student interest relative to department or division capacity).

AP calculus is the most useful course for advanced placement in an engineering curriculum.
