Engineering Internships ?

My daughter is just starting her Jr. year in Civil Engineering, and I wondered about how internships work, possibly for next summer. Are most summer internships located out of Gainesville (trying to plan ahead regarding housing for next year)? If so, does the student have to provide housing in another city, or does the company usually help with that? Lastly, regarding the Integrated Product & Process Design program, does participating in that allow you to stay in Gainesville, and are there opportunities with that for C.E. majors,... or more geared toward Electrical/Mechanical majors? Thanks for any info :)

I’m a nuclear engineering major, so the correlation may be limited, however, personal experiance: I had an internship in Los Alamos National Labs past summer and they paid for everything- flight, stay, work…I do know that many people who got internships in private sector did not have the same luck and had to find their own housing. this is only my (limited) personal knowledge so take it or leave it :)

^^^ I’m looking to major in Nuclear Engineering/Sciences :), though i intend to into medicine.

oh is that so? well you would than likely be in my dept, though taking diff specialty classes- the radiological part of "University of Florida Department of Nuclear & Radiological Engineering " :)

Appreciate the info jkruszelnicki. I hope to hear more about the IPPD program, to see if that is an option for her also. Best of luck to you!

GE’s Edison’s Engineering Development Program (EEDP) is looking for interns with the potential for a full-time job upon graduation.

It will be most definitely not in Gainesville – unfortunately GE has no presence in the majority of Florida.

EEDP: [United States : EEDP : Undergraduate Program : University Students : Careers : GE](Jobs for Students at GE)

It will be a paid internship (potential for co-op). GE typically arranges housing for our interns as well as reimburses for any travel expenses incurred traveling to and from the internship location.

I know quite a few EEDPs who would be willing to talk to your daughter and give her more information if it seems like a good fit.

Full disclose: I am a UF masters graduate working for GE’s Information Management Leadership Program (the IT version of EEDP, basically).

MuraliRath, thanks for the information…she will not be looking until next spring/summer I believe, but will pass on the info so she can look into it. Thanks again :)

IPPD is a two semester commitment starting in the fall semester. It is a 3 credit class, and you just take it with other classes, so you do stay in Gainesville during those two semesters. You do get to travel to wherever your sponsoring company is, but that is only for a day or 2. There are opportunities available for all engineering majors, number of spots available for specific major depends on the projects available. Also, you do have to apply for this program the summer before it starts. Check the IPPD site for specific deadlines.

I highly recommend IPPD, it’s a great experience and looks great on the resume. When I was interviewing for full-time jobs, my IPPD experience is all the interviewers wanted to talk about.

Thanks for the info boohahaha, that sounds like something she would really be interested in! Thanks again :)
