What exactly do the top engineering companies look for in hiring their workers.

Obviously the school one attends, and G.P.A. are important factors but what else are the determining factors. Also, how does this differ based on industry and company. I have been told that certain companies look for natural intelligence while others opt for work experience and internships.

Also, how exactly can a company determine who to hire. What kinds of things do they ask in interviews, and how can you get those interviews in the first place. What can one do to set him/her self apart with others who have similar GPAs.

I know that for ibanking/consulting and other business type jobs, the companies don't necessarily look for pure genius but rather opt for the charismatic, sociable, even schmoozy workers. Is there a "personality" engineering companies look for?
