Engineering M&S vs Mech E

first of all, yes, i know i'm not in yet. but want to be well-informed on the schools i'm applying to.

now for my questions...

1) which works better at Stanford for an incoming freshman? starting out with MS&E, or just jumping into Mechanical Engineering?

at most of the other schools i'm applying to, i'd probably just do Mech E, but at Stanford i'm not sure. the students/classes would be CRAZY, and i honestly don't know how i'd handle that from day 1. a lot of people in that major feel in over their heads, i wouldn't want that to be me.

2) also, what kind of weight does a MS&E degree hold?

i've noticed that a lot of scholly athletes are in MS&E.. i don't know about Stanford, but at most schools, that's a pretty good indicator of which majors aren't really the toughest. is MS&E one of those so-so majors that don't really help you find a job after you graduate?

3) can you start out on the MS&E path, and if you decide firmly on another Eng major later on, then make the switch and get your degree in that field in 4 years?

You will have 2 years before you have to declare your major at Stanford. By that time you will figure it all out.
