Hello CC'ers!

I don't post on here frequently, but I am in a bit of a dilemma and was searching for some additional insight. I have just received all of my college decisions and have to begin making choices.

I will be studying Mechanical Engineering, and I don't know which school to pick. I have been admitted to 9 programs and waitlisted at 2 Ivy's. However, these are my top four at the moment.

*Carnegie Mellon University - Carnegie Institute of Technology
*Ohio State University - College of Engineering & Honors College
*University of California, Berkeley - College of Engineering
*University of Michigan, Ann Arbor - College of Engineering

Which out of these four would you recommend? I am seeking a good balance between strong engineering program and a vibrant social scene/lots of extracurricular opportunities. I'd also like a strong career center since I hope to either attend graduate school or enter the workforce immediately after graduation. I also have some AP credits/college courses from HS that I'd like to use to get ahead/fulfill some general education requirements. Any advice?

My initial thought would be for you to go CMU, unless cost is an issue.

Net price at each school? Debt needed at each school?

Are you planning on pursuing an advanced degree, or to enter the work force after receiving your BS? OSU is big on preparing you for the work force. Michigan and CMU are ranked higher. You have four great options. You can’t go wrong with any of them.

I have nearly a full ride at OSU with scholarships. Michigan, Carnegie Mellon, and Berkeley would all cost around the same amount, since I have received scholarship and/or grant money from all three. I will be receiving some more outside scholarships, but I am not sure of the total amount yet.

I do plan on pursuing an MS in Engineering, but I was looking into possibly continuing on as a five-year program at whichever school I choose. For most of those programs, I wouldn’t be able to apply for master’s admission until my senior year in college though.

CMU unless the difference in cost is significant for you and your family. But these are all excellent schools that have all you need and more.

Thanks to everyone so far!! Bump…

I’d say CMU depending on the money impact of CMU verus OSU and what your family can pay. CMU has a good option for getting an MS in 5 years if you’re a reasonably strong student. One thing to consider is which area within Mech E you’re interested in and which schools have the same focus.
