Engineering major top ranked school vs. lower rank but masters in 5

Plus 1 for this

If he’s serious about wanting to work for NASA some day in aerospace engineering, then rather than regular Univ of Alabama, he should go to Univ of Alabama-Huntsville.

Actually, you can get to NASA from a lot of places. Just running some linkedin for nasa and aerospace engineer, I see Florida Tech, Saint Louis U, Missouri Science & Tech, San Jose State, Towson, Rowan. Those are just the first 6 or 7 I picked up. Some had grad degrees to.

I think you can get to NASA from anywhere. UAH is a great school - but I don’t think NASA is that concentrated.

I didn’t mean to imply what you interpreted from my response.

ok - my bad. I know a lot of people think there’s just certain schools - and just was trying to point out that even at the most prestigious of work places, they come from all over.

UAH is definitely better located than Bama (which has strength in cars) - and Fl Tech is another well located.

My purpose of mentioning UAH was because the OP said that the student was really interested in aerospace engineering and hopes some day to land a job at NASA.

Given the original question of “go to a top-ranked engineering school or get a master’s in 5 years at Univ of Alabama” (not UAH), I’d vote for the latter.

BUT if the kid REALLY REALLY wants to work at NASA, if it was my kid, I’d give UAH a serious look. 30% of the school’s undergrads are engineering majors. The most popular clubs on campus (like a space hardware club) are engineering clubs. The school has a really excellent co-op program with local employers. MANY MANY defense industry and aerospace companies have major offices in the Huntsville area and they ALL hire interns from UAH.

You can also continue to live on campus during the semester that you’re doing your full time co-op internship. Most of those result in the student getting a job offer at graduation.

Gotcha. I misinterpreted. I just think a lot of info (not from you) highlights just a few schools and I think kids can get to most anywhere from anywhere

Thx for the clarification.

Yes Huntsville is connected !!

Thanks. His sister has many friends who work in aerospace and graduated from UAH. We definitely have talked with him about that option. However, with the past 3 years of “covid” education and lack of social life, I think he is also wanting a bigger college experience… football, campus life, etc. Tuscaloosa will offer more of that then UAH… which has a different vibe if that makes sense.
