I have heard that the EE and IEOR departments in columbia are the strongest in the engineering school. What do people think about the computer science department? Is columbia computer science in the top 10 or not?

I’m not sure that EE and IEOR are the strongest departments in the engineering school. Also, it doesn’t really matter what the ranking of the program is, because USNWR does it through peer reviews. For example, Columbia was 20th when I matriculated but dropped to 30th within a year. First, rankings are not reliable and more importantly, the rankings don’t mean a better educational experience or better jobs.

CS program at Columbia is strong. I took several introductory courses and the professors were good. I’m not sure about the research but apparently Columbia is strong in internet security for research programs. Google, Microsoft, and some computer science firms recruit, though they recruit many graduate school students as well. Of course bank technology recruits, but it’s not a great job. Overall, if you’re in the top 20% of the program, you should be fine.

That said, CS at Cornell, UC Berkeley, and UMD College Park are much stronger. You can most likely get into these schools if you can get into Columbia but you’ll never know what you want to do so you can’t go wrong with Columbia.

most people in seas probably don’t come because of columbia engineering’s ranking… i didn’t. at columbia, engineers are offered two things that other engineering schools don’t have: the core and nyc.
i’ve heard good thing about ieor and compsci at columbia.
