I am a rising senior with a big interest in mechanical engineering, but Jazz saxophone is my true passion. My ideal at Brown would be majoring in both these areas, but I’m unsure of the feasibility of dual majoring in these two areas.
What is the reality of trying to pursue an education like I’ve described in these fields at Brown?
Just FYI, a music degree from Brown is in theory/history/composition, not performance. You could certainly double-concentrate, but you’d likely end up spending all your time in either engineering or music (no extra classes). You could also choose only to formally concentrate in engineering, but you could still take classes in the music department, take private lessons, be part of a jazz group, etc.
I don’t know how feasible it is at Brown, but I can assure you it’s more feasible at Brown than anywhere else.
You could do it at Swarthmore also (with a focus on mechanical but a general engineering degree). Here is an example of one of their alums, who not only double majored at Swarthmore, but also at Stanford for his Masters. Only one PhD (@ MIT)…must have been tired. He now runs Drexel’s STEAM programs at the Excite Center.

It’s possible at several schools. I gotta believe you could do it at Drexel as well.
Sorry, I didn’t mean to imply it’s impossible everywhere else, but Swarthmore and Drexel will both have required courses outside of the engineering and music majors. Brown will not. So while feasible at many places, none will be more feasible than Brown.
