Engineering + Music Programs?

I'm very interested in studying both music and engineering in college, but I'm having trouble finding programs similar to Lehigh's Engineering and Arts Degree. Does anyone know of schools that have programs similar to this? At the moment I've just settled with studying engineering and doing marching band and concert band on the side of my engineering degree. My main interest is a program where I can receive both degrees in 4 or 5 years, and it's fine if it's a BA Music not a BM because my plan is that I will then be able to choose which field I prefer and either get my Master's in Music Education or Civil Engineering after deciding which field is best for me.

Look at schools that have open door admission. There are many schools that would allow you to do a double major in both. Case Western is an example, but there are many many more. Avoid schools that require direct admit to the school of engineering and don’t allow you to cross register with the college of arts and sciences.

My D looked at dual degree schools for engineering and a BM in performance, but you may have more options for a BA. She considered Case Western/CIM, JHU/Peabody, CMU, Northwestern, Michigan, and WUStL. For the BS/BM combo, these are all ~5 year programs.

It’s a popular combo that’s asked about a lot here, but most students fail to realize exactly how hard it is to get an engineering degree, let alone double major in something that requires a lot of hours of practice time. You’re wise to realize that 5 years may be required, as often times just the engineering degree will take that long - strong students may be able to do both in 5 years or less, particularly if they’re willing to also take classes in the summer to make the load more manageable.

I can tell you that after a few engineering courses, you will know if engineering is for you - that becomes obvious pretty quickly. So you might start off with the option of going either direction, but quickly settle on only one.

MomOf2TeenGirls list is good. I would add Rice University and the University of Rochester to her list.

@Alexandre - please note that most of the music studios in Shepherd - the School of Music at Rice, actively discourage double degrees. It is rare that a music student at Rice can pursue a double degree. Rochester would be Univ. of Rochester with a second degree at Eastman…which is much more possible than at Rice. There are numerous threads about double degrees and double majors on the Music Major forum, including pursuing engineering as the second degree.

When we were researching possibilities for doubles, it appeared that Northwestern was the most accommodating.

When I visited WashU the girl I did the inteview with said engineering majors commonly double major in music. It’s definitely doabel there.
