Engineering + non-major music + merit aid?

What are some schools with good engineering programs, potential for merit aid, and the opportunity to play in music ensembles and/or take lessons as a non-major?

My stats are as follows:
-4.0 UW GPA, 35 ACT
-likely NMF
-All-state level flutist

I am planning to major in engineering; however, I would also like to continue playing the flute, although it may be difficult to balance schoolwork and music-related activities. My family can contribute $25,000-$30,000 per year to my education; however, NPCs show that our EFC may range anywhere from $25,000 to $40,000, so I may need (stacked?) merit aid to offset the cost.

what’s your state of residence?

Alabama has a full tuition that you qualify for. See the Financial Aid forum and the stickies for full tuition/ride. More after you get back to us.

I live in a generally underrepresented state in the South. We can pay for my in-state flagship, but I’m looking for other options as well. Thanks for the suggestion; I’ve heard a lot of good things about Alabama, and I will definitely apply there.

UMaryland has fine engineering and music programs. Their OOS COA is about 43K, and you should be eligible for some nice merit aid given your dual interests and skillsets. My son did engineering there. You should also consider UPitt (where my D is going), Tulane, Case Western, Ohio State, and Syracuse. Harvey Mudd, Wake Forest, Vanderbilt, Rochester, WashU, and Richmond might be interested in throwing money at a two-sport star. You need full tuition at some of these; at others there are in-between merit awards that might close the gap enough for you.

Alabama definitely…tons of merit for you and very cooperative for non-majors in ensembles, etc.

as a NMF in eng, you’d get

free tuition for 5 years (can also use towards summer abroads)
one year of free housing, including honors
3500 per year stipend
an additional 2500 per year stipend from eng.g.
ipad…newest one
2000 for study abroad.

Thanks! I plan to visit Alabama later this summer.

Have to give a shout out to my alma-mater - Oklahoma State University (http://www.okstate.edu). Great people, great school, engineering and music ensembles for all - I played in their bands (marching, jazz, concert) all 4 years on scholarship no less and was a MIS major.

Case western reserve.

If you are female, look at Smith College, which is one of the few small liberal arts colleges that offers engineering. Excellent merit aid for women in the sciences. Very good extracurricular music opportunities.
