Engineering Physics and Mechanical Engineering

Currently, I am a sophomore at Tulane Univ. majoring BME but I would like to change my major into Mechanical Engineering. But, Tulane does not have ME however it has dual degree programs 3 plus 2 that is studying Physics at Tulane then ME at either Vanderbilt or Johns Hopkins for 2 years. Then I will earn both BS degrees in the 5th year.

My question is : is it worth it to study 5 years to earn both undergraduate (BS) degrees or perhaps change my major in Physics or Engineering Physics at Tulane and go for Graduate School to earn the Master degree in Mechanical Engineering at any school?...Please advise. Thanks for your info and your time.

That definitely sounds like quite the deal. Two engineering undergraduate degrees in separate engineering fields and at schools like Tulane Vanderbilt and Johns Hopkins. It should allow you to see where your interests really lie and set you up for graduate school at a great university. Also good for a career. I’m not an expert but I would say it sounds like its worth it.

The engineering physics degree at Tulane followed by a Masters in mechanical is a better choice. Getting 2 BS degrees is rarely worth the extra time and expense. Use that extra yer in a graduate program.

Disregardn4M3 and Xraymancs: I am now in BME (Bio-Medical Engineering) honor programs, GPA 3.86 cumulative. But, for some reasons, I have lost interests in Biology and duly like designs and engineering. So, I am switching my major into Mechanical Engineering but Tulane does not have it (such dept was closed because of Katrina). But, my professor said Tulane has the Dual Degree programs (3 plus 2) and I am leaning towards that programs. My ultimate goal is going straight into Phd (ME) after undergraduate and I dont mind the extra time since I love both Physics/Engineering Physics and ME. Regarding the expense, I am getting full ride from the school and outside scholarship so it is not a problem. Anyhow, last night I have put my application for Dual Degree programs and also, after the finals next week, I will fill out the apps for the Transfers, trying to transfer into Vandy or JHU (Johns Hopkins Univ.). I heard that Vandy has better financial aid for Transfer Students than JHU but I dont know if it is true or not. Well, thanks for the info.
