With some of the big public schools my son is applying to for Aerospace Engineering, we have been hearing about a prevalence of profs who are difficult to understand as well as many who are excellent researchers but not good teachers. Can I get any insight from those of you in Engineering or who know people in Engineering (specifically Aerospace) as to your experience? I realize there is going to be some problem along these lines at every major university but I wanted to see how prevalent it was at UF and whether it has been a real problem for you. Thanks.

I think it's worse in the mechanical department (quite a few classes overlap with aerospace) than in other engineering departments at UF - at least from what I hear. I've only taken one class in the mechanical department, and it wasn't very pleasant as far as the professor goes. He just did not think too highly of his students. I will be quick to point out that the electrical department was fabulous :D

Well I was in MSE, but I had one engineering class that had a teacher that was very incomprehensible. His accent was so thick, who knows how he taught! It was a core course for all engineers too, and a large class. Besides that, maybe 1 other professor that I've had(I'm now a graduate student) was somewhat bad, but besides that they were easy to understand. (Of course, most of my professors in MSE were white and from England or the US)

Before you register for a class, check out some reviews on rateyourprofessor.com if you know ahead of time who they will be and read if there are anythings that might trouble you. You could always not take the class or switch to a better professor.
