Some kids like this do well in CC. I know one who signed up for the automotive program at a local CC and liked it so much after 2 or 3 years that he was inspired to go on to mech eng at Berkeley. CC gives them a low cost way to mature. It also shows them the difference between hands-on and theoretical.

Topshelf, your son should have a reasonable shot at getting into University Park, especially if he has a high GPA in Math and the Sciences and gets over a 650 on the Math section of the SAT. Pitt is another reach/match for him that would be excellent academically and meet your financial requirements. I would apply ASAP as PSU and Pitt both work on a rolling schedule.

The son is only a soph in high school.

I’m not sure if it’s the child that wants this major, or the parent.

As my friend Jafar would say, “he with the gold makes the rules!”. Hehe!

Seriously, whether the child decides to major in Engineering, another Science, Economics etc…, it is unlikely he will flip the script and choose to major in a humanity. Regardless, PSU and Pitt are both great options.
