I'm a current student but I don't really know the answer to this. The career center's website says that a suit is the standard, but I was just wondering if any engineers here could shed some light on if this is the norm for engineering interviews. I've heard that the dress code is more lax than for, say, a business or corporate interview

I just want to get an idea what everyone else will be dressed like. unfortunately none of my friends have done on campus interviews yet

also, for a career fair, are khakis + a dress shirt acceptable, or should i play safer with black dress pants and a shirt?

I’m wearing a suit. Well, a skirtsuit. But yeah. If you want to be taken seriously, get fancy (especially if you’re looking for a real job instead of just an internship).

The career center knows better than you know what to wear. Even entry-level engineers work with customers/clients/senior management - while appearances do not equate to content, it’s easier to build upon a good appearance than correct for a bad one. The interviewer is sizing you up from the moment you walk into the room.

Speaking as someone who could be on the employer’s side of your interview table (if we recruited at Rice - we don’t get that far west), wear a suit. Or at least your best dress slacks, dress shirt + tie, blazer. And shine your shoes. (attention to detail) Good luck!
