Like Harvey Mudd WUStL would require exceptional scores.

USC is also a good choice for a large school. They have a beautiful new engineering building and a good reputation in CA. Lockheed hires from there. I would say USC is a match while Rice is a low reach. She will have a better shot at Rice if she shows a lot of interest in the school - visit and apply ED. Bucknell is a good school, but I’m not sure it would be the right place for a shy student. She’d be better off at Rose Hulman or Case Western as a girl.

Thank you!

I was looking at this thread and have a little more information. D took the ACT in April and got a 35 composite, so that’s the test for her! She also brought up her school rank to 39/457.

We looked at Union, Bucknell and RPI and a few others over spring break. She liked Lehigh the best. As much as I think RPI would be a good fit for her financially, she’s not to keen on the place.
BUT she is now in the numbers ballpark for Rice, USC and Harvey Mudd. I saw a different thread about schools that give good merit aid and I informed her that she WILL be applying to University of Alabama so we have a financial safety that’s a cheaper option than our in-state schools.

I looks like D will be applying to a lot of schools. I guess her overworked guidance counselor was not happy at the amount of schools she’s got on Naviance, but hey, he’s not writing the checks, is he?

Oh, her SAT I was 2140 (CR740, M710, W690) so I’m going with sending ACT scores. Still waiting on SAT II scores but it looks like most schools require either SAT I and SAT II or ACT with writing, which is included in that 35 composite (36E,35M, 34R, 34S, writing sub 11) so would it be okay to send just the ACT scores to these institutions that require an either/or?

That is great news! (we drive through Troy a lot, H refers to it as “armpit of NY”) Glad to hear she liked Lehigh.

Yes, send the ACT since it’s quite the score. Congratulations to you both.

Phenomenal ACT score, congrats to your D! With that score, her GPA, and now easily within the top 10% of her class, she could be competitive just about anywhere. STEM-oriented schools are always looking for strong female applicants.

I’d caution, though, that some of the schools being discussed on this thread require SAT Subject Tests even if you submit the ACT. Harvey Mudd, for example, requires the SAT Math 2 Subject Test plus one other Subject Test of the applicant’s choice, whether you submit the SAT Reasoning Test or the ACT.

Yes, I suspected that would be the case. No rest for the wicked. Or my D…

Cooper Union?

Congrats!!!

:)
