Engineering Senior Project Attire, 5'' heels?

I am a senior engineering major and I am always concerned with the way I dress. I have my senior project presentation next week and obviously I am wearing a business suit. My problem however is with the shoes. My group consists of me(the leader) and three other guys who are all taller than six feet. Being a 5'2'' girl when I stand with them I actually look like a midget and call me shallow, but this actually affects my confidence a little bit.

So I'm planning to wear these Madden 5'' black patent heels to give me some height. My suit pants will be longer so the heel wont be that visible. I just want to know if this is appropriate and conservative for an engineer? I don't want to distract people from my project by looking like Im putting up a fashion show.

This is engineering, not marketing or sales. Trust me, folks will not care about your height or heels. What they WILL care about is that your leadership abilities and attention to detail are on point.

It’s not strictly necessary I don’t think but if you feel more confident wearing them then wear them.

Do what makes you feel comfortable (although I am surprised to hear that about 5" heels!), as long as the rest of your attire is appropriate you will be fine. It is doubtful anyone will look at your feet or care if they do.

Confidence is key; yes you don’t want to distract them from the project but you surely don’t want to be nervous and appear intimidated. Heel’s aren’t all that showy anyway unless you’re wearing something that really shows off your bare legs and hips; if you’re wearing dress pants you should be fine…sure the heels will prop up your butt and show it off more but the audience will be facing the anterior side of your body during the presentation for the most part anyway.

I’d hope they’re closed toe heels though, because you never know some key person watching might have a foot fetish and fancy your nail job

You will be taken less seriously as an engineer if you wear Kim Kardashian’s shoes.

Merely by being a girl in engineering you are of above-average status in the engineering world, so don’t not feel confident. :D

Lol @ foot fetish

We have a 30-something female engineer that commands respect from a global team of 150+ (she was project lead) and her work attire was often painted-on tight jeans, boots with spike heels, and various tops that would not look out of place in a reality show, well, you get the idea. But her engineering and customer skills are exemplary, so she gets away with it. Not to mention she bakes some seriously good baked goods for the team…

So, I would not worry about appearance as an engineer all that much. I’ve been wearing pressed jeans, Oxford shirts, and boat shoes or tennis shoes for 30 years.

OP - I’m a 5’2’’ engineer, with many tall coworkers (and a 6’2" husband). Trust me, very tall guys will look lots taller regardless of whether you have 2" heels or 5" heels. Wear what is comfortable.

Your confidence will come from the well prepared presentation - GOOD LUCK!

I would only wear them if you can actually walk gracefully in them. I see many young girls trying to carry off these platform pumps and they remind me of newborn giraffes - not exactly confidence inspiring.
