Engineering Subject Tests

Does anyone know what would be considered good scores for the Engineering School. S got 710 on Math II the first time he took it and is trying to decide if he needs to retake. Also, what would be a good score on Physics?

seas doesn’t use sat ii math or physics for placement, just ap courses.
and as we’ve been discussing in other threads, sat ii’s are not really used for admission.
the general rule of thumb is >700 is acceptable for a sat ii score

I’ll definitely defer to hazelorb about the importance (or lack of importance) of SAT II scores in UVa admissions, because frankly I don’t know differently. However, if you’re just trying to figure out in general “how good the score is”, or if you’re thinking about applying to other schools where SAT II scores are considered important, you may want to go to the site [SAT Percentiles](<a href=“College Board - SAT, AP, College Search and Admission Tools”>Understanding SAT Scores – SAT Suite | College Board) and navigate to the chart for “subject tests”. There you may be surprised to discover that a 710 on the Math II test is only in the 66th percentile! The same score on the Physics exam would only be in the 65th percentile (meaning that your score is better than about 2 of 3 test takers, but lower than about 1 in 3). I am not nearly smart enough to understand why or how the college board skews their test scores vs. percentiles in this way, but it certainly has to do with the generally high caliber of the students taking these tests- it appears that almost 10% of them score an 800. However I think the college board (and most colleges) do recognize that the SAT IIs do not represent a level playing field; the quality of instruction and subject matter presented to students varies greatly from one school, and one teacher, to another. Hope this extra data point at least clarifies where you stand to some extent.

My daughter who will be starting at the e-school this fall got a 710 in Math II and a 760 in Chemistry. She didn’t take Physics.

If he has taken any practice tests since then and gotten better scores, then I would suggest retaking it when he takes his other SAT II tests - but if not anything above a 700 is still a respectable score

if ur takin 2 tests take math2 and physics and if u r takin three take physics chemistry and math2…those will be the best possible choices

getting a 700+ in physics is really easy…i thnk u can get 800 even if u get 13 wrong in the test
