MainLonghorn: I don’t know what the hell you are talking bout, I asked for guidance regarding whether me triple majoring in engineering is doable and if so how would I go about doing it. Telling me not to followed by immature insults is not advice nor is it helpful.
PhantomVirgo: Scholarships, personal job, and if needed student loans. And I specifically said that I didn’t want to hear about the workload because I have heard it all and it isn’t going to help my question get answered. Just look at this thread! Every response was pertaining to the workload and not a single response answered the original question!
The fact that nobody has answered my question is proof enough that your responses weren’t helpful. For crying out loud I thought I was talking to college students or people out of college but from what I am seeing not a single one of you knows how to read the fine print.
jjwinkle: The definition of ‘besides’:
Besides - in addition to; apart from.
is my case I was saying apart from.
TomSrOfBoston: “You need to talk to your high school guidance counselor and listen to his advice without rolling your eyes and telling him that he doesn’t know what he is talking about.” Wow you sure have an active imagination saying as how my counselor is a women and I take everything she says very seriously. In fact, the cause of my research and asking on this site is the fact that I have an appointment scheduled to see her and when I do she is going to want to see that I have put some thought into what I am doing.
collegemom3717: Thank you, that was genuinely helpful.
Back to the original question, I originally decided to take these three majors because of how many classes they had in common, which you can see in my spreadsheet, and I thought this would make scheduling not as difficult because, to the best of my understanding, I would only have to take the classes once. I read somewhere that some colleges do not allow multiple majors in fields that are vastly common as in the above case and I was asking you experienced students if this should be a concern.
I suggest that you have your guidance counselor bring up this thread on her computer. She will review the advice that we have given you and it will give her an insight into your attitude issues.
You also need to ask her how she intends to help you afford your dreams.
Sigh, you guys really need to learn how to read, but for now I will just quote myself, “I specifically said that I didn’t want to hear about the workload because I have heard it all and it isn’t going to help my question get answered. Just look at this thread! Every response was pertaining to the workload and not a single response answered the original question! The fact that nobody has answered my question is proof enough that your responses weren’t helpful.”
bondangles: regardless if you guys “took your time” replying to my thread, you specifically did the single thing I asked you NOT to do and made no attempt to answer the question. Further more, you guys insulted me and my ambitions. I am a very prideful person and took that much to heart. If you asked me what my favorite flavor of ice cream is besides vanilla and I start talking on about how much I love vanilla ice cream then clearly there’s an issue.
TomSrOfBoston: I have addressed both of those issues already but clearly you are incapable of reading.
I thought I knew everything as a HS senior, too. I was convinced I could major in engineering and continue to play piano at a high level. It took me about two days at college to realize that wasn’t going to happen.
bodangles: No, nobody ever said it was impossible. You guys simple kept stating the fact that it was a lot of work which I asked you to leave out in my original paragraph. And if you guys are as qualified as you make yourself out to be then why haven’t you answered the question yet? You have yet to display any redeeming qualifications worthy of your title. In fact, you have perfectly demonstrated that you lack the ability to read which believe it or not has the reverse effect.
MainLonghorn: I don’t think I know everything, if I did I wouldn’t be asking the question in the first place.
I don’t understand how you can get a post like this on the very same site where the OP asks about 4 majors and gets all positive feedback meanwhile I ask about 3 which each have many overlapping classes and suddenly all the complaints come flowing in.
The OP in that thread did not have the extreme attitude that you have. The OP also stated that they have a 4.0 GPA and has already completed 2 years at USC. There are only a handful of replies and the recommendations were NOT to do it.
The OP on that thread didn’t have an attitude, correct, though that has a seemingly magical correlation with the lack of sarcasm and disrespect seen as well.
So you admit that you have a bad attitude. Time for you to learn from that. As a SuperModerator said above, you are going to have a rough time in life.
I admitted I had an attitude a long time ago. I even said I am very prideful. My pride is an innate aspect of my personality and I don’t see anything wrong with it. similarly, my attitude was justified. You guys antagonized me repeatedly with sarcasm and disrespect and it was perfectly natural for me to get angry. I am not displeased with any of my actions or reactions in this thread and am willing to state the issue very sincerely. This leads me to wonder if you are mature enough to admit that you didn’t read the thread clearly and that you were very sarcastic and disrespectful? I am a very introspective person at heart so it is perfectly logical to say that it bothers me when others don’t act in the same regard. For this reason I can only agree that I am going to have a rough time in life in the sense that people never live up to my expectations.
Well, some people here might not be able to read, but you can’t spell.
It’s “I cited…” as in citation, not “I sited…”
It’s “a woman”, not “a women”
If you are asking a question like this, people can’t just ignore the limitations you will face. Financial and otherwise.
The best scholarships come from the colleges themselves and they usually are limited to 8 semesters, except I think the NMF scholarship at U Alabama, which covers 10 semesters of tuition I believe. But you will still need money for living expenses, even if tuition is covered.
If you are Pell eligible, I think that is limited to 12 semesters. Student loans range from $5500 to $7500 and I think total undergraduate loan limit is $31,000.
So if Pell, loan and scholarship would cover your schooling, it would only give you about 4-6 years until the funding runs out.
At the time of typing I was somewhat angry so there were bound to be typos. I guess I should make it clear that I didn’t choose to exclude discussion regarding financial or otherwise work related limitations because I wanted to dodge the issue, rather, I have already given the issue much attention to the point that I deemed it irrelevant to the question. I am glad you posted information regarding scholarships though and I agree that the path I have decided for myself is not an easy nor cheap one.
MODERATOR’S NOTE:
I’ve deleted some of the more OT comments. I think we can dispense with further comments about attitude and focus on answering the original question from this point on. Thank you.
Same as me then! So let me tell you from personal experience: That won’t work out longer than 4-5 years. And a personal job with enough hours to cover all expenses along with a full class load (regardless of major(s)) isn’t something to take lightly. So you do need to plan accordingly. Which isn’t to say you can’t work while going to school and/or can’t take a heavy load while working, just that you need to have some plan to be out in as little time as possible for your goals to be financially feasible. Though as someone who has taken heavy loads while working, I’d advise against doing that if you can avoid it.
Don’t take this as a personal attack. There are only so many hours in a day, and to be balancing both a full class load and enough work to pay for things is stressful because of the sheer amount of time it takes, not even considering the difficulty of things or the person’s individual abilities.
So to tie this in to your original question, even if it were allowed it’s probably not advisable for financial reasons if nothing else. And this is very relevant to your original question because no matter how you slice it, three engineering majors would take a minimum of five years, probably more like 6+ years depending on overlap and your course load each semester/quarter.
And just to comment on this:
There are a few things to consider here: 1. This was posted on a forum for a specific school, so people posting there (theoretically) had enough personal experience with this to speak to how feasible it is 2. This was posted 8 years ago, so the site culture has surely shifted to some extent and 3. While people weren’t being sarcastic to OP, if you actually look you can clearly see people giving similar advice regarding the multiple majors being unnecessary, and advising OP not to do it.
So in a couple ways this is an apples to oranges comparison, and in one way it’s pretty much what you’re seeing in this thread, albeit with fewer replies and a different tone in the thread as a whole. Though my advice to that OP if they were to post that thread nowadays would be along the lines of what I initially said here: Pick one (maybe two in the case of business) and stick with it, because you don’t need all four.
