is cwru one of those colleges that 'weed out' students? specifically regarding the engineering program

Generally speaking, that does not appear to be the situation at CWRU. See here: [Case Western](Case Western). Compared to most private colleges, CWRU’s average GPA appears to be on the slightly lower side. Given an average gap of about 0.3 in GPA between Engineering and non-Engineering students (again, see gradeinflation.com), CWRU is probably not a “weed out” school. My experience is that most of today’s “weeding out” occurs at large state universities. Most private colleges have a huge incentive not to weed out students: the US News & World Report rankings.
