English 4W vs. 5W?

Hi,

Wondering if anyone can help me...what is the difference between Enlgish 4W and 5W? I am thinking of taking one of them next quarter to satisfy the Writing II requirement. Any suggestions too?

Thanks!

English 4W is for the English major. It’s very literature analysis based I think and I’m pretty sure it’s not easy (for someone who’s not interested in that stuff).

English Composition 5W is much more relaxed. You just write papers based on readings that revolve around some theme that the professor chooses. The professors are some of the same that teach EC3 and EC100W.

I’m taking English 4W now. As the above poster said, it’s very literary analysis based. The structure of the class and readings will depend on your TA, but to give you a general idea, you write about 3 papers the whole quarter and no final or midterm. The papers are anywhere between 3-6 pages and readings in the class include poetry and prose. In our class, we’ve read T.S. Eliot, William Blake, Yeats, Fizgerald (Great Gatsby), Mary Shelley (Frankenstein), etc. In terms of grading, well, I think it really opens your eyes to how horrible of a writer you really are, lol. It’s not that bad, but you get the chance to improve. On my first paper I got an 85%, and my TA went over what was wrong with my paper and why I got that. Hopefully my next paper I can get an A- or an A.

I took English 4W and I thought it was kinda easy. Just go to your TA a lot and he or she will be willing to help you develop ideas for your paper and stuff. And like the above poster said, the texts and assignments and based on your TA and what interests them -ish. I ended up reading Hemingway, Nabokov, and Tennessee Williams among other things… got two A-'s on my papers and the third I guess was an A, because I ended up with an A in the class. I liked the class and stuff, though; and it made me like the English department a lot.

Oh yeah, and I guess it is “very literary analysis based”… but then what else is an English paper? o_O’'

I guess a better way to put it is Eng 4W is a class made for English majors and EC 5W is a class made for non-English majors.

4W really depends on the “professor” (it’s usually taught by a TA).
If you’re not all that into intense reading and writing, why not just take English Comp 3?

4W is a great class for becoming a better writer. I had a fantastic TA who really set me up well for success in writing.

While 4W may be more “for English majors,” it has specific sections every quarter for English majors, and ones for non-English major. I have a biochemistry-major friend who is in one of the latter 4W sections and says nearly everyone in there is a biochem major, and that the TA knows this, and his class is pretty easy, and really enjoyable.
