OP, which university in the UK funds a full year abroad with such a shotgun approach to US institutions studying law? If we know your A level results or UK institution we could get an idea of academic match.
For the most different from London, and most immersed in US student life, You can google “best college towns” , look at a few of those lists and cross-reference against your list.
The best one I thought of from your list offhand is U Michigan, but of course it is not warm there.
The dude wants “nice weather.” I live 20 min from Ann Arbor & it snowed a few days ago. I’ve been outside twice in 5 months without a winter coat on. So can we just stop mentioning U of Michigan? The poor guy is going to think we don’t understand the words “nice” and “weather.”
Texas, Arkansas and LSU all meet your requirements. Big sports, big Greek system, all-American universities. California schools if you want the beach california life. My son’s friends from England loved Texas (UT) and even worked for a summer after their studies at a Texas summer camp.
I think Arkansas or LSU might be a bit of a culture shock coming from London and somewhere a bit more cosmopolitan (with good flight links as well) might be in order. I agree football is a big part of the US college experience, which would push UCSD off the list. So UCLA, UT Austin, Miami and Chapel Hill (plus maybe Boulder for the mountains, but it’s obviously colder) seem like a good set of options in different parts of the country. All have non-stop flights to London and decent options for flying within the US.
Kinda of surprised Georgetown isn’t getting any love. DC is a really cool city, easy to travel to other east coast cities via train and great academics. Weather isn’t as good as southern Cal or FL, but it’s not terrible either.
In addition to those that you’ve already removed, my two-cents is to suggest additionally reducing the following schools from your current list, as they are either too small, do not have the sports-orientation, traditional college vibe you’re looking for, or are less ‘fun’ focused:
Beloit College
California State University at Monterey Bay
Elon University
University of Massachusetts
Mercer University
Northern Arizona University (NAU)
Oregon State University
Pennsylvania State
Roosevelt University
State University of New York at Stony Brook
Washington University (assuming this is Wash U at St. Louis)
I disagree about Miami as being a good choice for what he is looking for as it is too international of a city and the football stadium is not even connected to campus. Yes you have the beaches not far but I think he is looking for more than that.
I disagree that LSU would be a bigger shock. Foreigners can always go to NY or California but Louisiana is a unique experience and the culture is fun which is what he was looking for. It has an unbelievable football culture with tailgating. It has sorority row which meets the girl requirement. And its very welcoming which is important. It’s also warm most of the time.
Also if he is looking to get married in the south people tend to marry younger and it appears that he is looking this direction.
@matt738 I think you’re going to get bogged down with tons of suggestions in addition to what’s already on your list, so unless you have the time to visit a ton of places, you should focus only on a few large schools near a big city close to a lot of things to do and see, where the weather temperature-wise is nice most or all of the year. So to me, since I did post a smaller list before, that should leave you only with these select few from your original list. I would focus just on these (abbreviations in parentheses).
UC-Los Angeles (UCLA)
UC-San Diego (UCSD)
UC-Irvine (UCI)
Arizona State (ASU)
Texas-Austin (UTA)
Georgia (UGA)
Florida State (FSU)
North Carolina (UNC)
U of Miami (in Florida) (the U)
If you want to reduce the schools to the above list further, that is close to beaches and the ocean, then you are down to:
UCLA
UCSD
UCI
The U
FSU
I’m surprised that you have a list of the big UC California schools, but not the one that would be in my opinion the quintessential best choice, or near the top: UC-Santa Barbara. But you really can’t go wrong with any in my lists.
@austinmshauri@scubadive Marriage?? I was thinking OP was just looking for a good time with “hot” girls. Unsolicited advice to OP: Most American college women really wouldn’t want to hang out with any guy who shows this attitude .
UC San Diego (perfect weather, laid back people, great beaches, beautiful women, relatively safe city)
and University of Miami (great college football, beautiful women, big party scene/South Beach) should be your top 2 choices in my opinion!
