I took the AP Eng Lang test and got a five and am currently taking AP Eng lit. I've hear that most colleges except either the AP Lang or AP Lit for the same English credit. Is this true? Am I just wasting my time with AP Lit?

It depends on the school. I think some schools give you like 10 credits, for example, for a 5 on AP English language, and then 5 more credits for AP Lit. Like that. But it really depends on the school.

well it depends which way u think........in terms of credit for college yes.
in terms of learning, no youre not wasting time.

personally, i prefer writing over reading and believe that writing is a lot more important to learn as reading can be developed on our own which is why i am only going to take Eng Lang in my senior year.

Umm.. the Lang and Lit test aren't divided like that. The language test also deals with a lot of writing. The multiple choice is like the verbal section of the SATs and one essay deals with an analysis of a passage. There's quite a bit of reading when you have to explicate a poem or piece of prose.

The Lit is similar in that you have to write a lot in the essays. One prose, one poem, and one open ended based on literary analysis.

You're creating a false dichotomy. Reading and writing go hand in hand. You have to read and understand a piece to write well. I wouldn't place one over the other really.

You aren't wasting your time if you're taking the class. If you're just self-studying the exam, then I wouldn't bother, unless you're going after an AP Scholar award. I've already taken AP Lang (got a 5) but still have to take the AP Lit exam to avoid having to take the final exam in my AP Lit class (what a waste of $84... why can't my school just ignore the AP ranking???).

As for getting credit, check individual universities' AP policies. I don't think any of the schools I applied to give credit for both exams.

It depends on the school. The exams themselves, however, are vastly different, and consequently the material you learn in preparation for each is worth exploring in an academic sense.

If you only care about credit, check your schools.

man , i cant believe you guys really do pay 84.

^The money pays off, not only in terms of credit but also showing that you can pass college level tests.

The LANGUAGE exam is a waste of time.
The Literature exam is worth all your time and money.
Neither test needs to be prepared for, thankfully.

Especially since some schools only count English Lit...

which class should be preferred over another? Language over literature or vice versa?

i just think that reading comprehension can be developed by one's ownself while writing is something that should be practiced.........opinions?

Is there any major differences between the 2 tests? Last year I got a 4 in the Language.

You'll probably get a 4/5 on Lit.

I hear Language is much harder.
