I'm an English major at Wellesley and I'm deciding between UCL, Edinburgh, and Trinity College Dublin. I'm looking for tutorials (i.e. individual attention), a strong English department, an urban location, opportunities to integrate with locals, and challenging academics.

Currently, I'm leaning towards Edinburgh but friends and parents are encouraging UCL.
I've been scouring university world rankings, past student evaluations and such but would love extra thoughts.

UCL is fantastic because it’s in London, but Edinburgh is completely stunning. If that helps at all.

I dont think you’ll find tutorials at Edinburgh, but apparently UCL’s English department have them. UCL’s English department is one of the oldest, best and most prestigious in the country, so on that basis id say go there.

Dionysus: Every subject at Edinburgh has tutorials. I think everyone is meant to have one per subject per week, or something of that nature.

Verbivorous: All three universities are great, and have good reputation for English. I think in the end, it should come down to your preference for where you’re going to live. London and Dublin are much more expensive than Edinburgh, in terms of cost of living. London is also much, much bigger. I can’t remember the population of Dublin offhand, but Edinburgh’s population is only about 400,000. It’s a perfectly sized city; you can walk most anywhere from the city centre.

I’m biased, but would recommend Edinburgh. I love it here. <3

If you can’t decide based on the course of study, decide based on where you want to live. You know that the population of London is much more than the population of the whole of Ireland including Dublin all together. Does that bother you? Are you a city person? Do you want to be one? If your main aim is to travel throughout Europe while you are studying, this will probably be easier and cheaper from London, but offset by the higher living cost of living in London.
