English teachers and book lists

I'm brand new to this forum as I've just started to consider becoming a high school English teacher. I'm currently on a gap year with a paid, full-time internship at the school from which I graduated, and one of my responsibilities is to work as a TA in tenth grade English classes. The occasional days I actually teach full lessons have led me to fall in love with this idea - however, I do have a question.

How much, if any, flexibility do English teachers have in terms of what books they get to teach? I assume this differs depending on if the school is public or private - I come from a small private school, and the teachers all had to agree on the same set of books for each class, but each individual teacher could suggest and book they wanted.

Sorry if this is an FAQ; I searched and I didn't get any really relevant results, but I could have searched for the wrong thing. Thanks in advance for helping this newbie :)

EDIT - Oh, and I'm not completely sure if this is in the right forum, so my apologies.

You might want to ask over at http://www.ncte.org.

This forum is dead, and it bothers me since I want to become a college mathematics professor.
