Do current UVA students register before incoming Echols students? It appears that way for the first years are already registering today and many classes are full. Do incoming Echols students still have a chance to take these classes?

Supposedly many of these classes have spots reserved for first years, and if you're Echols and going to one of the first orientations you register in the morning before all the other first years. Exactly how this works, I don't know but it's something to that effect.

Many classes, however, are indeed full. The priority registration doesn't kick in until you register for spring classes for 07.

i don't understand... so you're saying that incoming first year students (who have JUST enrolled), and all of the people who MAY get in off the waiting list yet are going to try to register for classes this summer and most will already be full? i mean, i'm not worried because i know there are requirements for first-years and whatnot that will obviously be kept open until our registration...but what you're saying sounds pretty illogical, unless i don't understand. are first-year students even eligible to take these classes that are already filled? i'm not an echols scholar and i'm not concerned about prioritizing the registration, but i was just wondering...

Spots will open up in classes during each orientation session for first year students. So even if you come later in the summer, there will still be openings. You may not get everything you want and at the times you want, but you should be able to get an acceptable schedule.

UVa holds open spots in the lower-level, introductory classes for incoming first years who will be registering over the summer. They release a certain number of those spots to each orientation session. The upper level classes that show up as full now are full and won't open up during orientation. So to answer the first post, yes, current students register before incoming echols. And if the classes you want are upper level classes that show as full then, no, you won't have a chance to take them this coming fall.

My particular concern is taking this 200 level french class. I'd imagine there'd be some incoming students who place in these classes. The section is almost completely full. Other than that, it doesn't seem like a big problem for me. Many of the other classes I thought about taking still have plenty of space.

Check the 053 COD listings, you'll notice most french 200 classes have a cap of 21. The current 063 COD shows the cap as 12. In other terms, about one extra slot will be added to each section at every orientation session.

oooo yeah i see that now. looking at fall 2005 vs. 2006 you can see the additional spots. that's good to know because looking at the COD now, it seems like a lot of intro courses are already full too.
