Truth is that the IITs are a pretty solid undergrad college, two big reasons they suffer on international rankings are:

They dont have the same money, so they lack the advanced facilities.

Consequently, grad studies aren’t as good as they are abroad.

I’m not saying that the IITs would kick say MIT or Stanford out of the water, but their undergrads do compete with students from MIT or Stanford.

@barlum - My interviewer was an Indian living in India, who also happened to be appreciative of the IITs, and why would he be interested in knowing how I did on the exam unless he cared about it?

I think we’re straying a bit from the original question, which was whether these test scores should be included in the application. If they are good, yeah go ahead and include them, it can’t hurt and may help. If they are not so good, then don’t include them as they are not required components of the application anyway. Pretty clear I think :)

If your MIT interviewer was Indian, he obviously would have been aware of the IITs. But considering that the interview is the least weighted part of your application, it doesn’t make a difference. If you’re a stuck up high schooler otherwise, even a #1 in IIT-JEE won’t help. Top colleges admit students on the basis of their overall application. Your overall application must be strong and not just an entrance exam score. As I said earlier, IIT-JEE ranks are for admission into the IITs and not MIT.

Plus, UT Austin is too easy to get into for an Indian val. There are no two ways about it.

bhanu

Getting into a Top 10 grad school is far easier than getting into it’s undergrad school.

I guess we all pretty much agree that although the importance of the JEE rank goes down the higher up the rankings you go, if someone has a good rank, there’s no harm in sharing it.

I think the discussion is pretty much over now and the conclusion is if one gets a good rank, there is nothing wrong in reporting it but one should not depend on it alone to get admitted.

And yes I would like to thank all of you for your valuable advice which has made my mind clear of all reservations.
