Entrance Fees

FYI for those who have accepted an appointment to USNA:

Now that your son or daughter has made the big decision, now comes the subject of the entrance fee.

BGOs were recently informed, per the Superintendent's office that there will be no deferrals of the entrance fee.

The Entrance Fee policy in the Permit to Report (PRT), included in the packets sent to those who have accepted a nomination explicitly states that payment of entrance fee is mandatory on or before I-Day.

We have been advised to counsel those that are unable to pay that they should immediately seek student loans to cover this cost. There will be local banking institutions available on I-Day to process loans as required, but I would discourage waiting until this most frantic day to seek the funds.

The Academy recommends that those candidates unable to pay the $2500 entrance fee "up front" obtain a government student loan prior to I-Day.

Another option is to highly encourage your son/daughter to apply for any scholarship available to them through their high school or community organization. Any money awarded to them can be used toward this fee, or later deposited into their NFCU account toward future expenses.

Hope this helps!
Congratulations to ALL

Sorry...typing too fast

s/b "accepted their appointment" not "nomination"

I apologize for the oops

Thanks!

CM: who do you make the check out to?

dumb ?, but why do u need an entrance fee if the academy is free?

It is, but there is this entrance fee. Go figure.

If you go to NAPS, the entrance fee is taken from your wages during your year in Newport, so the whole ride really IS free.

bcon1388....ya gotta lot to learn about what The Gov. means by 'free'. :-)

Even back in '68, when my hubby was a Plebe and they touted the "25,000 4 year scholarship"...they quickly learned they got this free education shoved up their a** one quarter at a time.

Still, it's worth it all...ask any alum

Now it's $250,000 one nickle at a time.

Ain't inflation a b!tch? :D

Navy2010
There should be information in your son/daughters packet with all the information. My guess (guess mind you) is that it is made out to "USNA."
The $2500 is a "start-up" fee to cover items issued (computer, etc.) those first days.
If a plebe DORs before recognition, the computer is their to take with them...this partially covers these costs.
It's like Christmas on IDay...the issued items amount to thousands of $$$.

Also, remember that Midshipmen, like all Officers, must pay for their uniforms. Midshipmen must also pay for their books and also pay a monthly fee for the barbershop, tailor, laundry fee, cobbler shop, etc.

The "start-up" fee is standard at all service academies (in fact CGA is $3,000) and jump starts their account that covers uniform issues, books, etc. Remember, each Midshipmen is paid a stipend each month, part of which goes toward paying off their "debt" and part is left for their NFCU account as "spending money."

What is stated as being "Free" is their tuition, lab fees, medical, and dental.

Other things to consider in the coming months are to check with your insurance company re: auto insurance (ex: USAA will cover your Midshipman/Cadet for free while they are enrolled at any of the 5 service academies and they are usually at I-Day with information). You might also wish to take out a "renter's" policy to cover their possessions in Bancroft.

Hope this helps out!

CM- thanks so much! yes, much help- and much appreciated!

re: renter's insurance....considering the Honor Concept, is there an issue with items gone missing from rooms??? Or is the insurance for something else???

Insurance is to cover "mysterious disappearance" as well as loss from fire, and other hazards. Premiums are small considering the coverage.

Let's give Mids the benefit of the doubt. There are stil several non-Mids who walk through the Hall every day.

thanks- that is what I was hoping to hear!

There was a webpage of how to send scholarship money to the Academy. Unfortunately, I have no idea where it is any longer. I do know as mentioned above that they will accept for fees, etc. Whether it would arrive before the due date (of the $2,500 entrance fee) is questionable as most scholarship committees are probably looking at August dates vs. June 28th. If I find the webpage I'll post it or perhaps someone else can.

okay, let's be honest: mids will be mids. stuff goes missing, people steal, although i'd say the majority of what is missing can be mainly attributed to the fine melwood staff thats does the janitorial work. now the cmod's have to write down whenever they actually see the melwood staff working...to prove that they actually do something other than mill about, gab to each other, smoke by the lejeune fountain, and wander aimlessly around the hall. sorry to sound bitter, but they fall asleep on wardroom couches, which plebes aren't even allowed to do. however, i'm sure their services are cheap, so i wouldn't be expecting a change when you all get here. basically, lock up everything you don't want a strange person milling through. in other news, i had my pro-board today! 95! no more pro-knowledge for me--ever!

wheelah44: congratulations! 95!! that is great!!
now- can you please clue me in on what is a pro board- ??? are you tested on rates? is that the content in reef points- or is this something else entirely? I want to know so that I can fully appreciate your steller performance!!!!

That's about the size of it.

In four years, I don't recall a single angry argument or fight, or a single instance of something being stolen by a mid from another mid. I do recall one mid getting busted stealing something from the Midstore, but he got off because he played the race card.

Congrats!

What's a pro-board? Is that the new term for the PCR (Professional Competency Review), otherwise known as the "Pecker"?

Don't be so sure. I can guarantee you you'll be having to memorize LOTS of pro stuff as the years go by!

Ever heard of PQS? ;)

haha zaphod as i had to memorize the swo pipeline, i have indeed heard of pqs. i'm just glad no more infernal quizzes. im guessing pro-boards are the new term for pcr's.

each sunday night plebes take a quiz based on information in your professional reference manual: topics range from submarine warfare to the united nations to uniforms-its a variety of information and platforms you basically have to brain dump-the quizzes are just a matter of memorization, but if you get below an 80, you fail. failing two leads to a company board...and it just gets worse from there. this culminates in a pro-board at the end of the year, when a 3rd, 2nd and firstie from your company, as well as an out of company striper, sit you down and ask three questions each--on whatever they choose, whatever they want. topics can range from opinion questions (what kind of youngster do you want to be?) to technical (what are the weapons fore to aft on an arleigh-burke? what is a carrier air wing comprised of?) to "what are the 1st, 3rd and 5th laws of the navy?"

sorry for the long rant, but i thought it might be useful information. btw, this is during the ac year, not plebe summer.

Interesting. They didn't do that in my day. Each class had the PCR exam, but not boards. I like the newer idea, as it mimics the fleet much better.

Our pro-quizes were held on Friday nights, and we had the same two-failure rule. I'm trying to remember if I still have my pro-books somewhere.

We took out a renter's policy for our cadet in case of a fire or water damage. Considering the cost of uniform, book, personal items, electronics and computers (we chose the replacement cost coverage option - no depreciation and it covered damage to the computer) a $10,000 policy was $50.00 for the year.
You never know when a pipe might burst, or some other unfortunate event can happen. USAA was great, saying we didn't even have to get serial numbers or anything because they know the computer models and such.
