Hi,
I’ve already applied to all my schools, but I wanted to know how you guys think my essay could’ve influenced my whole application
I wrote about how I struggled with anorexia for three years (recovered during freshmen year), and grew up with a schizophrenic uncle. Then, the majority of my essay focused on a charity I founded that funds a program at my school that helps mentally ill high schoolers. I know mental health is generally a bad thing to write about for college essays, but I figured my case might be a little different.
Was I right, or was that a mistake?
Doesn’t matter now, don’t second guess. Good luck with your applications.
Generally, the rule of thumb is that if you are no longer affected by the mental illness you are writing about, it should be fine. Otherwise, don’t write about it since colleges may think you will bring it onto campus. I wrote about my epilepsy when I was young, and it no longer affects me. I hope it turns out well also.
