I submitted my Common App and supplemental essays to about 10 schools last night (mostly IVYs, and selective privates). Upon saving the submitted PDFs this morning, I noticed something awry: My essays that I added a single space to between paragraphs, look as though they have 2 spaces between, rather than the expected 1 space. I have been reading about the weird formatting of the Common App text-submission sections all morning, but nowhere have I found anything about how admissions officers will react to seeing wider breaks between paragraphs. Can someone please tell me whether these wider breaks will significantly affect my admissions chances at these schools, or whether these spaces will annoy officers to the point that they won’t even read my essays? Thank you so much.
It won’t hurt you. It might even help you, with more space between paragraphs it’s more easier on the eyes, and the mind to digest than one big wall of text if it makes you feel better.
^^Agree.
Thanks so much! This is quite a relief, as I was really thinking that officers would see some kind of big discontinuity thing going on… but this is nice to hear.
Helpful post, had the same problem as well.
