I am aware that there are several different writing styles that one can employ to capture the attention of the audience, who in the case of boarding schools are the admissions officers.
I am assuming that they go through several essays over a short period of time.

Recently, I have written a very figurative, metaphorical essay. At first sight, it is poetical, light, free-flowing. Within this essay, I have incorporated a very clever (or so I think ;)) allusion to the school. To the wary eye, the meaning of the metaphor is easily recognized. But it can also go unnoticed, simply another detail in the long, flowery descriptions.

Is this advisable? How much time does an admission officer spend on a particular applicant and a specific essay?

well idk that anything that u feel comfortable writing with, as long as the grammer/spelling/those little things are alright- do whatever feels right,im sure that admissions will notice it. ^_^
