Essay topic: General or Specific?

I've been debating for a while now as to which would be better: Taking a general idea, quote, etc, and just putting that idea/quote into my perspective OR writing about a specific incident that changed my outlook. Many people have said that writing about a specific event is usually better-- but I just don't want to risk having a "this incident completely changed my outlook" essay that sounds cliche, and end up hurting my changes of getting into a college rather than helping me. In your opinion, which 'type' of essay is better?

If your choice is between analyzing a quote from your perspective and giving a personal, detailed, honest and revealing report of a specific event, then I would recommend the latter.
