I am applying ED to wharton, and I wanted to write about being an atheist at an ULTRA christian school and how it has affected me to be more confident and question everything around me. I have heard from several people that it is a good essay topic if you feel strongly about it (which I do). Just wanted thoughts from people specifically at UPENN. Let me know!

It’s a great topic if you’re respectful about it. Bit tricky to write.

It’s original and really says a lot about the strength of your personality. You mustn’t bash Christians though. Talk more about freedom of choice and your personal methods of making sense of the world instead of about how other people are so easily deluded. Talk about being different, rather than logically superior.

I’d definitely go with it though, but I’d have some people look over it to make sure it’s not offensive at all.

That’s what I thought. Any other ideas?

I would love to read that essay. An atheist at an ultra-Christian school? How did you get through it? My only concern would be trying to remain respectful of the religion even if you do not believe in it. You never know, you may have an admissions officer who is ultra-Christian.

Good luck w/ applying. I’m applying to CAS nxt year hopefully.

Haha I know right - my whole family, friends, counselors always focus on god. I think it’s a good fit for the common app essay because it sort of is a “risk” to be atheist. at my school, if the school knows you don’t believe in god, you can’t even be honored as valedictorian or salutatorian so it’s pretty weird.

and Yeah i know that i have to be super careful. I am very tolerant of all beliefs. Iw as thinking about almost writing about how I am almost became more accepting of other peoples beliefs when I lost god.

You would need to be a deft writer for that topic. You can’t make yourself sound like a victim or talk **** about anybody else.

I think there is nothing wrong with that. I am pretty sure that most of the people at UPENN and other progressive schools are open-minded about atheists, if not atheists themselves. So, like everyone said, as long as you write about the topic in a tolerant/respectable manner you should have no problem.

If you valedictorian or salutatorian, you should annonce to the world that you are an atheist but respect all religions and those who choose to adhere to one.

thanks for all of the opinions. yeah i would have to be very cautious, but I’m going to try to start now so I can have an ample amount of people read it and look over it. I’m glad I’m getting such positive replies because other similar posts didn’t seem to have this concensus

BUMPP 10char

This would be sick as long as you don’t bash anything or anyone else.
