I have few very interesting Essay topics in mind that can be a good read, but they relate more to larger issues and don’t necessarily tie back to me very well. Would it matter if they don’t really involve me as a person but just show my ability to write and my opinions?
bump
But these topics do,in fact, relate back to you in the respect that they reveal a lot about how you think & about your level of intellectual curiosity.
True that they do reflect back on the Author however many, rather most essay’s I am reviewing on the web are about personal experiences or events and that’s where I get conflicted.
Write a draft of your essay & have a trusted person who has some knowledge regarding college admissions critique it.
If you do not have someone to read & critique your writing, I will be happy to give a brief critique of your essay if you PM it to me. (I am an adult poster.)
Your essay has to be about you, and give the reader a sense of who you are that they can’t necessarily learn from the other parts of your application. When they are done reading your essay you want them to think we must have that person on our campus…showing that you can write well is not enough.
Is there a ‘larger issue’ that you are passionate about, one where you can demonstrate your many strengths and positive traits?
Very solid advice, in my opinion.
There is another thread that was started today by poster Michael C. Short. He has experience reading application essays for Stanford university. Offers interesting advice with which I agree.
There are very few rules about writing college application essays. Every writing typically reveals a substantial amount of information about the author.
The meaning of “writing well” varies depending upon the situation. Writing a legal brief is quite different than writing an essay for admission to a creative writing major. The safest style of writing is to be clear and concise. But that is not the only style.
Every writing done by you is about you in the sense that it will reveal much about your maturity level, your level of intellect, and about your analytical abilities in addition to other qualities. Write as you want, than have a trusted person familar with college admissions review it for you.
Thanks and agree, there are differences in ways to write based on the task at hand and college essays have to show who the applicant is. Not going to comment on MCS’s post, as I am not a fan of people coming on to CC and talking their book.
Interesting comment regarding book promotion on CC. I would like a thread devoted to books on colleges as well as on the college application process including essay writing.
I meant that specific poster’s book of business. There is a nice summary of admission books, it’s pinned somewhere…maybe in the college admissions thread?
Thank you so much for your offer
