Essay Word Limit

Mine is about 2,500 right now and I'm going to continue to edit, but does anyone know if going quite a bit over is looked down upon? I read in a previous thread that someone wrote seventeen pages and was admitted, so I am hoping that is a good sign. I don't generally not follow directions like this, but a biography is hard to condense!

My feeling is that if your essay is interesting and well written, they would not mind reading more than the word limit. I think word limits are a way of communicating to the writer, the amount of detail that needs to be used in order to provide a potent self-examination. Any less than 1500 words and you’re probably not telling everything there is to tell…but the 2000 word limit is to deter people who would go through elementary school, grade by grade haha.

Just make sure that if you are going over the word limit, that each sentence actually says something about you. If they see fluff and excess in an essay that goes over the max, I’m sure they won’t be happy.

I know how hard it can be, mine is about 2200 words and I just couldn’t do any less! Good luck!

Thanks for the response! I ended up submitting about 500 words over, but I really felt I needed the space. We’ll see what happens! Good luck to you too!
