On the Michigan website, it says that one of the essays should be approximately 500 words. If I went to 520, is that OK, or is that too much? How many words would you say you can go above or below in order to stay within the approximate word limit?

520 is fine

well just in general though, how much can you go under or over to stay within the approximation limit? This is useful to everyone, which is why I'm bumping it.

just get your point across. one of my essays was 280 words, one was 290, and the other was 490. I think they just don't want a two page essay when they only asked for 1/2 a page.

As a general rule I would say plus or minus 10% is "approximately."

Hahaha my "500" word essay was over 700 and I still got accepted in the first batch. Its just a guideline...I'm sure they don't check unless it seems super long.

yeah mine was that long too....we'll find out two weeks friday if i'm in the first batch.
