Essay Writing Style? Wordly Sophistication - should we really avoid it?

I've been trying to find a unique writing voice recently for these college essays, however, when talking about a profound topic that deeply moves me, I have trouble avoiding "artly prose" so to speak, in that, I DO use "big vocabulary" and very complex sentence structures. However, from reading everywhere, it seems that the general sentiments on this is that we should pretty much avoid that kind of writing style - so my question is simply........

True or False :D

Are you worldly and sophisticated?

Most 17-year-olds are not. (I certainly include myself at 17 in that group.)

Don't present yourself as something you're not.

lol no no not worldly. i just made up the word wordly. sophistication might be a different matter though.. i mean, in general, anyway.

thank you for your suggestion though! and i think that's what adcoms are going to think anyway right? but my question is, if that IS your writing style, i mean seriously, it's how i've written in the past for all school papers etc. and my teachers are i guess.. impressed? but i have not won national recognition for it or anything. but the real question is, should we avoid a sophisticated writing style, even though it's our natural writing style, because most adcoms are going to assume is phony?

btw - hanna! you're going to yale right? or harvard, but i remember yale? =)

I know a couple of people who, I suspect, share this writing style. It can cause problems in that it may seem a tad pretentious or over-edited, as you've already heard. Since the essay is about you - a personal account, there's no need for it to carry an academic or 'sophisticated' flair. I don't think you should try to change your writing style, but give it to several people, smart adults, and see if they think it represents who you are. G'luck!

thanx!! =)

Yubi - I share your problem 100%. My academic writing style is just that...very academic. This was a big hit with my AP Eng Lang teacher, but I'm a little worried about how my essays will turn out. That's why I really need to get into those this summer...of course, first I have to narrow down my college list and figure out where I'm applying. Well, not that I have to do that first, but I'd rather...

aww lavendarcloud - ok well i've been doing lots of research from primary sources and secondary. the conclusion i draw is that we really can't use our writing style like that, but rather we can incorporate it. and it's really about the way you approach it. try not to talk about things where you are likely to get all profound and "abtract" if you go to this article they have.. here's the link (originally posted by Adad to me at another thread) it really gives you a good idea. take a look also at the thread i started regarding essay topics, you'll see that writing style plays a part, but it depends on how we use this unique voice we have.
