Essay

If I were to write a essay about how I have overcome hardships, is that an acceptable topic? I want to write it, but I don't want to come off as making it seem I want their pity to grant me acceptance. Should I steer clear of a topic such as this because ofthe possible negative ramifications?

Unrelated, if I take only 3 years of language, but I take a AP class in its place my senior year, will this hurt my chances? The only reason I want to do that is because I am really uninterested in spanish
Oh and i know another language besides english so its not that I don't want to take it again my fourth because I don't want to expand my horizons, its that I've had enough of foreign language and am really uninterested in it.

Oh if you can please answer both my questions thx

About the essay, hardships are a tricky topic. If it is not done well, it can seem like whining. However, if you pull it off well, and allow yourself and your personality to come through the essay, than it could be great. It all depends upon how it is written.
As to the language thing, I can't honestly say, as I am not an adcom.
I hope this helps
