Essay.

So how important do you guys think the essay is to the MIT application? I know whats done is done, and I was okay with my essay when I sent it in and if I changed my mind about it there's nothing I can do but just thought I'd get your opinions, because people always say it'll come down to how good your essay was, but on the MIT College Board page it has essay under considered while the rest of the application is under important. So trusting that are we really right in saying if you're a strong applicant that it'll come down to essays? What do you guys think?

Not too sure, but the essay can be a tipper if all of your credentials are great/qualified.

College board probably has aspects such as grades and scores as important because they get your foot in the door. Those aspects of your application seem to be more important for showing MIT that you can handle the workload.

On the other hand, most of the applicants are very well qualified academically, so they need to look at more personal aspects of the application, such as the essay. An "okay" essay won't hurt you, but its your best opportunity to make yourself stand out among thousands of applicants. There are other ways to stand out, so if your essay wasn't too great, hope that there is something else interesting about your application.

Good grades get you looked at, but standing out gets you in.

The essay for MIT is probably more important than for other colleges. You really need to write something that distinguishes yourself and your personality from the thousands of other applicants who are bringing all sorts of amazing science/engineering things to the table. If you can do that, and if you let your essay reflect your true voice, you'll be in great shape and MIT will want you. If you think your essay is boring, run-of-the-mill, and not really anything special, I think that will have a tangible impact on your admissions chances.

That College Board page showing the weight of various aspects of the application is more or less BS. It really does not reflect how admissions works and besides trusting that grades and course load are important, it's very difficult to pin down the "importance" of other aspects of your application.

agree. MIT essays are extremely important period.

well im screwed... i think mine was generic except for the grabber and the conclusion...

My main essay was like below average but I did both supplementary ones that were good since they were about specific and important things so I'm not too worried since I have 2 semi-good ones to counteract the bad one, just thought it was interesting that so many response to chance threads basically imply that your decision will be made solely on your essay quality.

I find that interesting as well... Also when people list their stats, they always put something to the effect of "Essays: AMAZING!!!11."

I mean, who can really judge their own essays to be amazing in an impartial way? Or guarantee that the adcoms will find them amazing? Obviously most people THINK that their essays are perfect, they wouldn't send them in if they hadn't done their best.

I agree. Same with recs. Whenever anyone says amazing for either I take it with a grain of salt.

well... i only hope a neurosurgeon who had the chance to go to MIT can persuade them... and a teacher who has been teaching for 40 years at my high school who thinks im the best and admires me the most... 40 years should persuade them lmfao
