Establishing CA residence for new LPR

@lindyk8 Yep! Luckily, I only need four classes to meet the UCLA requirements, but this is the first loan I’ve had to take out since I started CC. I was given very generous financial aid at my school in Washington!

@incogneato, are you attending WLAC full time? Are you completing WA units at the same time toward your AA from them? Is your fiancé paying OOS fees now? Did the loan originate here in CA?

Since it appears you moved to CA for school – I assume it was to be with your fiancé – and you are currently paying OOS fees, it is possible they may not consider you a resident even after you are accepted. Only the Residence Deputy can determine that, with everything you will eventually submit.

I suggest you contact the Non-traditional Students network at UCLA in hopes of finding someone in a similar situation. http://www.transfers.ucla.edu/Student-Involvement/Transfer-Student-Orgs

Good luck – it is mighty hard to obtain in-state residency!

@Happy2Help We moved down here because my fiancé got into grad school at UCLA (he didn’t have the stats to apply for his first year). It seemed to be the best time since I would be so close to being done with my Washington schooling and could get integrated into things here in California. We chose California as it was a place that we could see ourselves living for a long time (we both have family and friends here). I am completing my last two classes at my community college in Washington right now and this quarter will be my final with them. I will then be full-time at WLAC for winter session and spring semester. My fiancé is indeed “paying” (via loans) OOS tuition right now!

As far as I’ve been told, yes you can establish state residency by changing drivers license, obtain a CA address, etc BUT in order to establish state residency for educational purposes, you must be in CA physically for a year. So keep hold of your utility bills, etc to show proof when your year is up, and they may switch you over to “in state” status.

@incogneato OK so you are paying WA in state fees right now and WLAC OOS fees. To me this is a red flag to deny in-state fees part of next year since you still have ties to WA and it shows you don’t satisfy the “intent” portion of the residence policy. I believe your transcript (and when you report on the TAU) will show that you took those WA classes (online I assume, but your transcript may not say they were online). So your 366 days of continuous CA residence won’t start until later.

Please be careful, be diligent and try to talk to the Residence Deputy at UCLA. I am not an expert, but all your facts aren’t indicating a clear case.

Thank you, everyone! I was given the e-mail and information for the Residency department and will be getting in touch with them.

Please let us know (in a new thread) how it goes! Good luck!

@Happy2Help I most definitely will. Thank you so much!
