Establishing Residency In California

I will most likely be attending school at a UC for fall 2008. Since I am out of state, I was wondering how hard it would be to establish residency if my parents were not in the country. Can someone please explain the process and if it would be difficult?
Thanks

You can't without working at least a year first.

would working on campus qualify?and for the part about being financially independent...how hard is it to prove that?

No. Simply put (and there are always exceptions, but realize that both the state AND the federal gov'ts have watchdogs for this), any evidence you are a student is an automatic disqualifier for a change in residency. You need to live there year-round for at least 1 year, NOT be a dependent (as determined by your parents' taxes -- generally, you would be above the age of 22), and you need to have proof of residence (campus housing does not count).
