<p>I agree with SheepGetKilled that (C) is the best choice. But I’m not so sure that (A) is wrong for the reason given. Strictly speaking prepositional phrases can be subjects, and I expect that in spoken English no one would think twice about the original phrase. That said, writing “by unplugging” instead of simply “unplugging” makes the sentence more complicated than it needs to be, and my opinion is that this is the reason for choosing (C).</p>
