Ever had a perfume you love discontinued?

I’ve basically only ever found one scent in my entire life that I love and can tolerate (my sinuses and perfume don’t get along). It is now no longer being sold. This is such a silly complaint, but I’m so bummed out about it. I’m sure I’m not alone - ever happened to you? Any tips on finding something similar (without buying and trying a ton)?

Yes and yes.

Diorella. First it was discontinued, then they brought back a reformulation which is NOTHING like the original. I have various allergies and am always trying to recreate the original scent without triggering an itchy rash where I put it- no luck.

There are various websites (google your original perfume) that have true perfume groupies trying and posting substitutes. Nothing has worked for me but maybe you’ll have better luck?

I also loved the original Y. Haven’t been able to find that in 20 years.

What are you looking to recreate???

Nothing that was produced on the scale of the big brands. The company is called Soap & Paper Factory and they had a Green Tea line. I stopped being able to find the roller ball perfume oil a year or so ago, and resorted to buying the hand cream, but now even that is gone. :frowning:

I am sad for you… this looks like a cool brand…

There is nothing more aggravating than a loved product being discontinued. I’ve only worn 2 scents that I get multiple compliments. Must go with my body chemistry. I’ll be so bummed if that ever happens.

What seems to always get discontinued for me are lipsticks and lipglosses.

I’m assuming you have gone online to try to find it being sold by a 3rd party? I’ve seen websites that compare dupes in lipsticks, maybe you could google that for colognes.

Yes- the lipstick thing is very frustrating. Especially when you reach out to the company and they direct you to one which is “almost exactly the same”. Well, the color may be the same, but the texture never is- or it has a funky fragrance, or it changes color on your face after ten minutes.

Aaargh.

Yes, very bummed to find that Charlie (original, not colors) is discontinued and VERY expensive if you try to find it via back channels (and who wants an old bottle of scent anyway). Guess I’ll have to stick with Sweet Honesty. I wear these vintage colognes because they take ChoatieDad back to…well, never mind.

ETA: Which reminds me–it’s Christmas–time to check his stash of Brut and British Sterling…

Oooh my mother used to wear Charlie!

I’m not a perfume person, but I still miss the original Herbal Essences shampoo scent.

I used to love Ysatis by Givenchy, but they changed the formula and the older scent is no longer available.

I haven’t had this happen to me yet. My everyday perfume for years has been Coco Mademoiselle by Chanel which I have worn for at least 15 years. I also wear Chanel No. 5 which has been around forever.

My great-grandmother wears Charlie. Just saying. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Sadly, Revlon has not been an innovator in the cosmetics industry for decades.

you may be able to find discontinued perfume on eBay.

Yes, I discovered Scandalous at Victoria’s Secret and they discontinued it shortly thereafter. I had bought 2 big bottles and am on the last one. I don’t know what I will do when I use it up. There are other perfumes that I think smell fine on other people, but I don’t like them on me. I hate trying to find a new perfume.

Who’s to say your great-grandmother doesn’t have an account here, ski? This wouldn’t be the first time you’ve questioned my identity. :older_woman:

A. I know where you live, since you told me.

B. Your English is much better than hers.

But I will acknowledge a bit of separated at birth between ChoatieLT and I.

I can’t recall my mother’s cologne, although it was very popular in the 80’s. That’s all she wore. I need to find it so I can spritz something at home, “to be with her”, even for a second. I don’t think it should be hard to find the name. Found it. Ciara

This company (website below) recreates many perfumes, including those that the manufacturer has discontinued. You can purchase the re-creations online. The smallest size is usually $45. I’ve purchased a number of Jo Malone scents and I can’t tell the difference between the recreation and the original. There are other scents I’ve purchased and they aren’t like the original. On the whole, I’ve found more winners than losers here.

Shalimar…hands down favorite. My mom and grandmother both wore it too. Just a wonderful scent. Not exactly discontinued….but reformulated…which almost as bad IMHO. Fortunately I can still find the older formula on eBay but it’s pricey so I use it sparingly.

I have a bottle of shalimar in my fridge, never opened (a gift last year). It was my mom’s favorite- how is it reformulated? I’ll be so sad when I open it if it doesn’t smell like her!
