Everything you want to know abt Furman

In this one video. The young boy in the video is the Prez real life son!

YouTube - thefurmanchannel's Channel

Hahaha I knew someone would post that here. Its creative, I’ll give them that.

Yea, they played that at the Accepted Students day… LOL

There has been a lot of debate about the video–which has since been removed from the Furman channel–and how it portrays Furman.

I’d like to ask y’all on the forum–those who are prospective/accepted/current students–to comment on what you thought of the video. It has since been taken off of the Furman channel, and I’m not sure where/if it’s available on YouTube.

I have mixed feelings, personally. The marketing department sent a link to the video to the whole campus community. I thought that was a bad move. The video has a very specific audience in mind, which is prospective students, and their families.

I’d love to hear what you guys think.

Hi Woody2013,

We watched the video during the accepted students day presentation on Monday of this week. My D is a big Harry Potter fan. As a matter fact we just got back from visiting Universal Studios “Harry Potter World” the week before. That being said, we interpreted the video as just a light hearted way for the President to connect with prospective students. Thats it! I didn’t really think it’s intent was any more than to show that Furman and the President have a sense of humor. For what it is worth, my D sent her commitment letter in today. I truly think it had very little to do with the video.

Just curious what the tension is all about is all about? When we noticed that the youtube video had been removed, I thought some sort of copyright concern had been raised.

On an unrelated note, I was happy to see your post today here. We actually had read through your “Freshman Tips” thread today and the information really alleviates much of the anxiety and fears a new student may have.

Woody, could you elaborate about the debate?

I don’t see anything wrong with the video. Not anything great either, could have been much better. But still, the video is FINE.

What I’m more concerned with though is with taking the video off Youtube. It sure looks to me like “sweeping the dirt under the rug”. Good or bad, what’s done is done, everybody already saw the video and they should deal with it, taking the video off ain’t helping IMO.

I’ll be attending Furman as a freshman next fall.

Just fyi, the video is on Tosh.O as a leaked version. Still don’t see the big deal, but in hindsight probably should have just been used on the Recruiting day and left off the internet.

I can see both sides of the debate. The more seriuos Furman followers will see it as childish. Others will see it as a creative way to market to future students.

First time I viewed it it seemed creative. On second and third views I didnt see the humor anymore

The video has been pulled from Tosh-I know since our son is home for Easter and had told me about it. You can find it on the web, but it is not easy. I think that the Marketing and Admissions office need to revisit their strategy for increasing student enrollment. Both of our kids are big Harry Potter fans, but DD is embarrassed-she says she hopes it is not how Furman becomes known to employers, etc. I agree with George on this-except that I thought it was “unbecoming” to Furman the first time I saw it. Truthfully, it strikes me as something a CC or unknown school would do to get attention. I know that sounds stuffy, but it turns me off. The fact that Furman has pulled the video does not reflect well on the marketing impact or execution of the video.
