Excited and confused about my major.

I'm 18, in community college, really having difficulty deciding my major. I NEED to be involved with music. It's my passion.. and it's one of the only things I get joy and excitement from.

I have a little background in piano, but I am 75 percent self taught. I know a really decent amount for someone who isn't taught formally, and I really revolve my life around music.... making it and wanting to learn more. Everyone I meet tells me what a future I could have.. how talented I am... all that... "bs" I mean... I want to be realistic. I want to know what I can do with music.

While I am thoroughly interested in audio production and electronic music... I don't know what major I want to pick. Piano composition fascinates me.... but the compitition and difficulty scares me.

I want to know if getting a degree in composition is a realistic goal. If I prepped myself with more classes so I could get... up to the bar with sheet music and theory and technique to match what I already play self taught...

can I live my life for music? Please?

Does everyone include professional musicians, performers, music faculty or those with the knowledge and background to realistically assess your talents and skills?

Is your focus classical, jazz or another genre? Have you had any formal instruction, at what level, and for how long? Every play in a organized program of any sort? What is your current level of knowledge of music theory?

These are all important questions that need answers before anyone here can even begin to guide you.

No one on an internet forum is in a position to assess your current level or potential. The best we can do is point you in a few directions and provide some background.

I’d suggest you read through these first.
